8 Steps before you begin Gardening.

Ready to just head out into the garden and get your hands dirty! There are some things to think about before heading out. Having prepared will stop you from running in and out of the house tracking garden dirt everywhere.


  1. What tasks will you be completing?

Have a plan. This will allow you maximize you efficiency and not get off task.

(Example, pruning raspberries, deadheading, lawn mowing, weeding)


2. What tools are required?

Depends on the tasks to be completed.

(Example, pruning raspberries, long sleeves and pants, gloves, pruners and loppers)


3. What is the environment?

Protect yourself! Either from the suns rays or the pesky mosquitoes, flies or ticks.

(Example, sunscreen, bug spray, proper clothing and footwear)


4. How much time do you have?

Can this task be accomplished fully or will it take more then one outing. Where is a good place to stop and leave til the next day.

(Example, planting the garden, make sure you have sufficient time left to water the plants in or only plant as many as you can water in and then leave the rest for the next time)


5. Do you have a plan for clean up, compost or garbage removal?

Is your compost pile ready for the new addition? Do you need to take things to the dump?


6. Is your body ready?

Gardening is physical work and often requires a lot bending or kneeling. Do some quick stretches before heading out. You will thank yourself the next day!

(Example, a couple sun salutations from yoga)


7. Are prepared for the harvest?

Are you bringing in any veggies, fruits or cut flowers. Is your indoor space ready?

(Example, space to wash and dry veggies, vase for cut flowers)


8. Do you need help?

Struggling to get through the tasks is never fun. Ask for help from a family member for help. Many hands make for light work!

(Example, pruning raspberries , one person cuts out the canes and the other is the clean up crew)
